Historical NoteThe 80th Congress took place January 3, 1947 to January 3, 1949 under President Truman and it had a Republican majority in the House and Senate. Truman called it the “Do Nothing Congress” due to blocking many of Truman’s Fair Deal bills. However, the 80th Congress did pass the Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, and Taft-Hartley Act.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
