Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ stands behind a ticket counter with two placards ("Travel Tax $" and "Ticket Tax $"). A man says, "While flattening the purse!". A woman stands next to him. A sign ("Slow up non-hemisphere tourism--Check excessive outflow of U.S. dollars") is on the counter. Caption: “Foreign Travel Broadens the Mind–”. Additional text at lower right: “New Orleans Times-Picayune, Feb. 12, 1968”. Artist signature lower left: "Pletcher”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: "To President Lyndon B. Johnson with best wishes of Eldon Pletcher".
Historical NotePresident Johnson announced plans for a travel tax which would tax Americans traveling outside the Western hemisphere. However, this was shelved in March 1968 by the House Ways and Means Committee.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
