Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. The figure of Uncle Sam sits at a desk and reads a document ("Proposals for Control of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes"). Standing behind him, LBJ speaks over his shoulder to a donkey in nearby doorway with a sign ("My Nov. 4th Mandate"). Caption reads: "Sorry...That Pass Is No Good Here!". Artist signature lower right: "Jim Berryman Washington Star. 11/19/58".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten lower right: "All good wishes to you, Lyn..."
Historical NoteThe United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space was founded in 1959 after talks first began in 1957 after the launching of Sputnik. During the Cold War, people feared that space could be used for nuclear weapons. When this cartoon was made, Senator Lyndon Johnson was the Senate Majority Leader.
