Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ unchains the US Eagle, which clutches an olive branch ("Unrelenting Peace Offensive") in one talon and arrows ("Unconditional War on Poverty") in the other. In its beak it holds a banner (“State of the Union”) as it flies with its wings (“Foreign Policy”, “Domestic Policy”). Caption: “The Eagle Released”. Artist signature lower right: "Ed Valtman ‘64”. A small piece of paper “The Hartford Times” adhered to lower right.
Historical NoteIn January 1964, Lyndon Johnson delivered a State of the Union Address discussing his plans to continue John F. Kennedy’s legacy, as well as steps to combat poverty and racial discrimination.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
