Historical NoteAs a part of the War on Poverty, President Johnson passed education laws, health laws, and urban development laws. He also passed civil rights laws such as the Civil Rights Act to end segregation, the Voting Rights Act to fight the disenfranchisement of Black voters, the Fair Housing Act to end housing discrimination, and affirmative action programs for government jobs. Throughout the 1960s, Black employment rates, average years of education, and median income all increased.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
