Historical NotePresident Johnson used personal persuasion to avert a rail strike and end a five-year dispute over work rules, bringing negotiators to the White House. It was one of many strikes Johnson averted or helped settle in his presidency.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
