Historical NoteDuring Lyndon Johnson’s presidency, Richard Nixon initially supported the Vietnam War because he did not want it to appear as if the United States would step down to avoid war. Meanwhile, negociation was difficult with North and South Vietnam as well. North Vietnam did not want to recognize the government of South Vietnam and had the goal of reunification. South Vietnam did not recognize the National Liberation Front.
