Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Frame 1: Nixon stands at a podium saying, "The war can be ended". Frame 2: A dove drops its olive branch and shouts "Hooray". Frame 3: A hawk drops its arrows and shouts "Hooray". Frame 4: LBJ jumps out of his chair shouting "Hooray". Artist signature lower right: "Le Pelley The Christian Science Monitor”.

Historical NoteThe Vietnam War attracted both Democrat and Republican critics due to the loss of life, cost to the economy, and ineffectiveness of stopping the spread of Communism. Part of Richard Nixon’s campaign promises included ending the Vietnam War.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
