Historical NoteOn January 23, 1968, the USS Pueblo was captured by North Korea, which claimed that the ship had entered North Korean territory. In response, President Johnson negotiated for the release of the captive sailors to avoid getting into another war. The Space Race was the competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to further space exploration and technology out of fear of space being used for nuclear power. Eventually, the goal was to reach the moon. President Johnson's approval ratings went up after the bombing halt of November 1968.
