Historical NoteThe mid to late 1960s brought nuclear proliferation, a long Vietnam War, and other destabilization around the world as the Cold War went on. In the United States, political and cultural divisions grew amid social changes and social movements. These factors led to pessimism toward politics that contrasted with the optimism in the early 1960s.
