Historical NoteOn November 22, 1963, President Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald while riding in his motorcade in Dallas. Hours later, Johnson was sworn in as president on an airplane. A month later, a memorial service was held for him in Washington, D.C.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
