Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man (“U Thant”) points his finger and yells at LBJ. Nearby another man ("Czechs") is tied to a stake with a tank ("Russia") with a hammer and sickle symbol pointing its gun at his head. Caption: “Your Bombing of North Vietnam Is a Violation of UN Principles--And Quit Trying to Confuse the Issue!”. Artist signature lower right: "Brooks The Birmingham News”.

Historical NoteIn early 1968, Alexander Dubcek, the new leader of Czechoslovakia, created liberal reforms that allowed for more freedom of speech and the press. The other Warsaw Pact nations invaded Prague to strengthen the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and stop the liberal reforms.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
