Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionYellow gold tie clasp with a disc that has a raised fluted edge. Centered "Lion of Judah" on a stone wall against a stippled or florentined background. Simple spring type with chain and bar attached. No quality mark. Given with cufflinks 1967.6.3 B. Presented personally during informal WH visit February 13-14, 1967.
Historical NoteThis “Lion of Judah” gold tie clasp was given to President Johnson by His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia during an informal visit to the White House on February 13-14, 1967. The “Lion of Judah” is one of the titles of Solomonic Emperors of Ethiopia, and due to its association with Selassie, it continues to be an important symbol among members of the Rastafari movement.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to the President, First Lady or member of the First Family during President Johnson's term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 20, 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
