Historical NoteAbout one-third of American soldiers that fought in Vietnam were drafted. Many men avoided the draft through college deferments and family connections, so it disproportionately affected men from poorer backgrounds. The draft lottery would eventually replace it in 1969. One criticism of the draft was that 18-year-olds could be drafted, despite voting age being 21. The Twenty-Sixth Amendment was passed in 1971 and lowered the voting age to 18.
