Historical NoteLyndon Johnson’s public image was influenced by both his Great Society domestic policies and Cold War foreign policy, including American involvement in Vietnam. The Johnson Administration submitted 87 bills to Congress, and Johnson signed 84, or 96%, arguably the most successful legislative agenda in US congressional history. For his foreign policy, Johnson followed Harry Truman's doctrine of containment, which was intended to stop the spread of communism. Johnson’s foreign policy, especially in Vietnam, attracted both Democrat and Republican critics due to the loss of life, cost to the economy, and ineffectiveness of stopping the spread of Communism.
