After serving as the 34th U.S. Vice President in 1945, Harry S. Truman became the 33rd president of the United States in 1945, following the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Truman served as President of the United States from 1945 to 1953, during which time he made the decision to deploy the atomic bomb against Japan, assisted in the recovery of postwar Europe, fought to restrain communism, and guided the US during the Korean War.
