FOLLOWER OF EDWARD SAVAGE

Savage was one of many talented artists during the Federal period and was well-known as one of the first proprietors of a museum and picture gallery. He is known for portraiture. He studied in England where his technique improved, but, back in Philadelphia, he relied heavily on the assistance of his apprentice John Wesley Jarvis and English engraver David Edwin. They and others claimed that their talents added significantly to the quality of Savage’s work in these years after 1801.
