Fidel Castro led the Cuban Revolution and overthrew President Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Once in power, Castro served as Prime Minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976 and as President from 1976 to 2008. He is largely credited for establishing Latin America's first communist state, where he served as the Communist Party of Cuba's secretary from 1961 to 2011.
