Albert Gore Sr.
United States, 1907 - 1998
U.S. Senator from Tennessee (1953-1971) and father of Vice President Al Gore. He also served in the House of Representative as a Democrat from Tennessee’s 4th district (1939-1953). He was a supporter of most of President Johnson’s Great Society programs. However, he voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 but supported the Voting Rights Act of 1965. His re-election defeat in 1970 was attributed in part to his opposition to the Viet Nam War.
