Paul H. DouglasUnited States, 1892 - 1976

Douglas was a United States Senator from Illinois and a noted economist. He taught economics at various universities and served several officeholders, including Franklin Roosevelt, as an economic advisor. He was elected to the first of three terms in the U.S. Senate in 1948. He was a member of the liberal coalition in the Senate and was a proponent of civil rights and fiscal discipline. He was eventually defeated for reelection in 1966 by Charles Percy. He was also a decorated veteran of World War II, earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
