William F. Buckley Jr. was a conservative commentator who founded National Review magazine in 1955 and hosted the television show Firing Lane from 1966 until 1999. Buckley ran for mayor of New York City as the Conservative Party's candidate in 1965, but was defeated by Republican Congressman John Lindsay. Buckley authored more than 50 books throughout his career and his daily column "On the Right" was reprinted in over 300 newspapers.
