After a career in finance, Abraham D. Beame served as New York City's comptroller in 1962 and 1970. In 1973, Beame was elected the mayor of New York after defeating Republican party nominee State Senator John J. Marchi, Liberal party nominee Albert H. Blumenthal, and Conservative party nominee Biaggi. Beame became the city's first Jewish mayor and presided over the 1970's fiscal crisis.
