Francisco FrancoSpain, 1892 - 1975
Francisco Franco was a Spanish military general who led the Nationalist forces in overthrowing the Second Spanish Republic during the Spanish civil war. His dictatorship lasted from 1939 to 1975. His rule was characterized by nationalism, authoritarianism, national Catholicism, militarism and conservatism. While Axis Power-leaning, Franco managed to stay out of World War II to give Spain a chance to regain its footing after years of war and to stabilize its economy. He remained a controversial figure in international affairs. He left office because of illness and died a short time later in 1975.
