Bergen was best known as a ventriloquist with his sidekick dummy, Charlie McCarthy. He also worked as an actor, vaudevillian, comedian and radio performer. He is in the Radio Hall of Fame and Charlie McCarthy was donated to the Smithsonian Institution.
