After a series of failed political campagins from 1957 to 1961, Lester Maddox sought the Democratic nomination for governor in 1966. Running on a platform that advocated for segregation and state rights, Maddox became the 75th Governor of Georgia in 1967. Maddox was later elected as Lieutenant Governor of Georgia in 1971.
