Hart has been an attorney, political operative, United States senator, presidential candidate and diplomat. He ran the unsuccessful presidential campaign of George McGovern in 1972. He represented Colorado in the United States Senate 1975-1987. He sought the Democratic nomination for president in 1988, but his candidacy was derailed by rumors of an extramarital affair. He served as special envoy to Northern Ireland 2014-2017.
