Herbert Hoover was elected Director of the U.S. Food Administration in 1917 and was appointed as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce in 1921. Defeating Al Smith in the 1928 Presidential election, Herbert Hoover became President of the United States in 1928 during the onset of the Great Depression.
