Liz Carpenter began her career as a journalist, writing on politics for The Daily Texan, Austin American Statesman, and other publications. In 1960, Carpenter assisted Lyndon B. Johnson's vice-presidential campaign, and after Kennedy's election, she was appointed the first woman executive assistant to a vice-president. When Johnson became president, Carpenter worked as Lady Bird Johnson's press secretary from 1963 through 1969.
