Edmund Muskie served as a member of the Maine House of Representatives from 1949 to 1951 and Governor of Maine from 1955 to 1959. Under President Jimmy Carter, Muskie was appointed the 58th U.S. Secretary of State. In 1968, Muskie campaigned as the Democratic vice-presidential nominee under Hubert Humphrey, but was defeated by Republican vice-presidential nominee Spiro Agnew.
