Hamani Diori
Nigeria, 1916 - 1989
When Niger gained independence in 1960, Hamani Diori was appointed as the first president of the country. He remained in that post until a coup ended his rule in 1974. Diori was imprisoned for six years and was later put under house arrest until he moved to Morrocco. He was recognized as an accomplished arbitrator of conflicts among other African nations.
