Sara de la Hoz married President Julio César Méndez Montenegro in 1966 and served as Guatemala's first lady from that time until 1970. During her husband's presidency, De la Hoz concentrated on social activism and founded the Patronato de Obras Sociales de la Esposa del Presidente, an organization that focused on provided assistance to citizens in need.
