Physical DescriptionPrint reproduction of cartoon drawing. German clipping. A bulletin board has business and holiday cards. One card (“Auf gutes Gelingen, Brüderchen! Ergebenst N.S. Chruschtschew Getreidemakler, Toronto N.K. [Good luck, little brother! Sincerely, N.S. Khrushchev, Grain Broker, Toronto, N.K.]”). depicts a man (identifiable as Nikita Khrushchev) sitting in a chair on the phone. Another card (“Happy New Year Glückwünsche aus Onkel Johns(ons) Hütte [Congratulations from Uncle Johns(sons) cabin]”) depicts LBJ sitting next to five children. The third card (“Bonne Année [Good Year] Charley de Gaulle Ehrenvorsitzender der Atomwaffengegner [Honorary president of nuclear opponents]”) depicts a man (identifiable as Charles De Gaulle) sitting with a beret and scarf and a sign with the peace symbol. A small piece of paper “28.XII.63.(TA)” adhered to lower right. Caption: “Neujahrskarten Phantasien eines Karikaturisten [New Year's Card – Fantasy of Caricature]”. Additional text at lower right: “Zeichnungen [Drawings]: Albert Altorfer / Copyright Tages-Anzeiger [Daily Indicator]”.
Historical NoteOne of the cards in this cartoon depicts Nikita Khrushchev on a telephone, a reference to the Hot Line between Washington and Moscow. Another card depicts Lyndon Johnson surrounded by Black children, a reference to Johnson's support of the civil rights movement. The third card depicts Charles de Gaulle with a peace symbol and beatnik hat, alluding to his criticism of American involvement in the Vietnam War.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
