People (identifiable as LBJ, Ludwig Erhard, Charles de Gaulle, Mao Tse-tung, Nikita Khrushchev, Gamel Abdel Nassar, Chung-hee Park, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sir Alec Douglas-Home, Francisco Franco, Zalmar Shazar, Levi Eshkol, Hastings Kamuzu Banda, and Kenneth David Kaunda) climb into a rocket. An angel keeps track of a machine and looks at the screen (“1964”). A small piece of paper “2.I.64.(W)” adhered to lower right. Caption: “Bitte anschnallen und: guten Flug! Historical NoteDuring the Johnson administration and general postwar era, much foreign policy was dictated by the Cold War, the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union for political influence amidst decolonization, associated with proxy wars, ideological struggles, the nuclear arms race, and the space race.
