Physical DescriptionPrint reproduction of cartoon drawing. German clipping. At a table with a pig (“Prosit 1964 [Toast 1964]”) on it, men discuss what they want. LBJ thinks about a black man and a white man smiling next to each other. The second man (identifiable as Lugwig Erhard) thinks about a newspaper (“Zeit…Deutchla…wieder vereinigt [Times…Germany Again Reunited]”. The third man (identifiable as Charles de Gaulle) thinks about a bomb with a tag (“Made in France”). The fourth man (identifiable as Nikita Khrushchev) thinks about wheat. A small piece of paper “3.I.64.(T)” adhered to lower right. Artist signature lower left: “Nico”.
Historical NoteDuring the Johnson administration and general postwar era, much foreign policy was dictated by the Cold War, the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union for political influence amidst decolonization, associated with proxy wars, ideological struggles, the nuclear arms race, and the space race. In this cartoon, world leaders think of what they want to happen in 1964. Lyndon Johnson thinks of civil rights, which would later happen that year with the Civil Rights Act. Ludwig Erhard wants German reunification, Charles de Gaulle wants French production and ownership of nuclear weapons, and Nikita Khrushchev wants food imports for livestock.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
