Physical DescriptionPrint reproduction of cartoon drawing. German clipping. A nut with the face of a man (identifiable as Charles de Gaulle) is held by a man (identifiable as Mao Tse-Tung) as LBJ and another man (identifiable as Ludwig Erhard) look on. Erhard holds a paper (“Deutsch-Franz Vertrag [German-French Treaty]”). A small piece of paper “19.II.64.(N)” adhered to lower right. Caption: "Es besteht die Gewißheit, daß jede Nuß den Gesetzen der Schwerkraft gehorchen muß [It Is a Certainty, That Every Nut Must Obey the Laws of Gravity]". Artist signature lower right: “Nico”.
Historical NoteDuring the Johnson administration, US officials continued to refuse to recognize the People’s Republic of China in favor of Taiwan and did not allow the PRC on the UN Security Council. In January 1964, France officially recognized the PRC.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
