Historical NoteDuring the Johnson administration and general postwar era, much foreign policy was dictated by the Cold War, the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union for political influence amidst decolonization, associated with proxy wars, ideological struggles, the nuclear arms race, and the space race. In this cartoon, Lyndon Johnson uses the American dollar and financial power to propel himself in the race, while Fidel Castro rides on the back a snowman with Communist skis. Meanwhile, Charles de Gaulle uses nuclear bombs as his skis, demonstrating how France was emerging as a nuclear power after it detonated its first bomb in 1960.Additional Details
