Historical NoteDuring the 1960s, Charles de Gaulle’s foreign policy included increasing France’s role as another competitor to the United States and the Soviet Union. In this cartoon, Lyndon Johnson stands in front of a poster of de Gaulle in China, referencing how France recognized the People’s Republic of China in 1964. The poster of de Gaulle in Mexico alludes to a state visit to Mexico where de Gaulle criticized the United States’ influence in Latin America. Charles de Gaulle criticized American involvement in Vietnam and ended the Algerian War in 1962.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
