Historical NoteDuring the Johnson administration and general postwar era, much foreign policy was dictated by the Cold War, the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union for political influence amidst decolonization, associated with proxy wars, ideological struggles, the nuclear arms race, and the space race. In this cartoon, Lyndon Johnson sits on eggs labeled Panama, Cuba, and Vietnam, three nations where the United States had ideological conflicts with at the time. Charles de Gaulle sits on "Grandeur", "Glorie", and "Prestige," alluding to his pro-French foreign policy. U Thant, the secretary-general of the United Nations, sits on Cyprus and Congo, refering to the crises in both countries. Ludwig Erhard sits on Berlin, since the city has been divided by the Berlin Wall since 1961. Nikita Khrushchev sits on corn, a reference to increased importants of food for livestock in the Soviet Union, and Mao Tse-Tung sits on grenades, a reference to China's 1964 detonation of an atomic bomb.Additional Details
