Physical DescriptionPrint reproduction of cartoon drawing. German clipping. A man (identifiable as Nikita Khrushchev) is a horse trainer that has to control five horses with the heads of men (identifiable as Charles de Gaulle, LBJ, Mao Tse-tung, Ludwig Erhard, and Sir Alec Douglas-Home). A small piece of paper “22.IV.64.(N)” adhered to lower right. Caption: “Kadar hat Chrushtoschow fünf weiße Pferde geschenkt…zum Üben! [Kadar Sent Five White Horses to Khrushchev . . . to Train!]”. Artist signature lower right: “Leffel”.
Historical NoteDuring the Johnson administration and general postwar era, much foreign policy was dictated by the Cold War, the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union for political influence amidst decolonization, associated with proxy wars, ideological struggles, the nuclear arms race, and the space race.
