Physical DescriptionWhite marble funerary portrait bust of a young Roman boy from the 1st Century A.D. White marble with a brownish-gray patina. Traces of erosion, especially on the left side of the face. The size and shape the neck shows that this head was removed or part of a draped statue. Brass insert at bottom to connect to a base.
Historical NoteThis sculpture of Roman boy was given to Lady Bird Johnson by His Excellency Antonio Segni, President of the Italian Republic on January 16, 1964, during a state visit to Washington, D.C. The sculpture was originally made during the age of Tiberius, the 1st Century A.D., to preserve the memory of a young boy after his death.

Custodial History NoteThis item was a gift from a foreign official to First Lady Lady Bird Johnson during the Johnson Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
