Physical Description
Physical DescriptionElephant tusk, carved out in the shape of a procession of 7 elephants connected head-to-tail. The tip of the tusk is carved into a crocodile's tail, and the larger end is an open crocodile mouth.
Historical NoteThis carved tusk was given to President Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson by His Highness El Hadj Seidou Njimoluh Njoya, Sultan of Bamoun Foumban, Cameroon, and Queen Ramatou. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, G. Mennen Williams presented the tusk to President Johnson following his return from a 1964 trip to Africa.

Custodial History NoteThis item was a gift from a foreign official to President Lyndon B. Johnson and First Lady Lady Bird Johnson during the Johnson administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
