Physical DescriptionCarved elephant tusk. Relief sculpture along one side includes various animals (alligator, deer, elephants, lion, monkey) interspersed with tropical trees. Brass plaque on reverse: "President Lyndon B. Johnson." Stored in wooden presentation box with ivory handle (Presentation box is not part of collection).
Historical NoteThis carved elephant tusk was a gift to President Lyndon B. Johnson from His Excellency William V.S. Tubman, President of the Republic of Liberia. It was presented to President Johnson by Dr. William R. Tolbert, the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia on July 7, 1965 in Washington, D.C.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to the President, First Lady or member of the First Family during President Johnson's term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 20, 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
