Physical DescriptionOne of a pair of elephant tusks carved into intertwined elephants and trees, on a black ebony base. Plaque fixed to the base.
Inscriptions and MarkingsPlaque reads: "Presented By Lieutenant General NGUYEN VAN THEU Chairman of the National Leadership Committee of the Republic of Vietnam", "To H.E. Mr. Lyndon Baines JOHNSON President of the United States of America".
Historical NoteThis carved elephant tusk is one of a pair that were given to President Lyndon B. Johnson by His Excellency Lt. General Nguyen Van Thieu, Chairman of the National Leadership Committee of the Congress of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Vietnam on February 12, 1966.

Custodial History NoteThis item was a gift from a foreign official to President Lyndon B. Johnson during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
