Physical DescriptionIvory figure of a bearded man holding an elaborate staff in one hand and the 'peach of immortality' in the other. On lacquered wood base.
Historical NoteThis figure was given to President Lyndon B. Johnson by His Excellency Air Vice Marshal Nguyen Cao Ky, Prime Minister of the Republic of Vietnam on October 25, 1966, during the Manila Summit in the Philippines. The Summit was a gathering of 7 nations united in their determination that freedom be secured in South Vietnam. The figure in the statue is that of Shou-lao, the god of longevity, recognizeable by his prominent cranium and long beard.

Custodial History NoteThis item was a gift from a foreign official to President Lyndon B. Johnson during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
