Historical NoteThis figure was given to President Lyndon B. Johnson by His Excellency Air Vice Marshal Nguyen Cao Ky, Prime Minister of the Republic of Vietnam on October 25, 1966, during the Manila Summit in the Philippines. The Summit was a gathering of 7 nations united in their determination to secure the freedom of South Vietnam. The woman in the sculpture is playing the đàn tỳ bà, a traditional Vietnamese four-stringed lute.

Custodial History NoteThis item was a gift from a foreign official to First Lady Lady Bird Johnson during the Johnson Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
