Historical NoteThis gold pendant was given to Lady Bird Johnson by His Excellency Francisco J. Orlich, President of the Republic of Costa Rica during an official White house visit on July 7, 1964. The pendant is from the Palmar Sur region of the Diquis Archaeological Zone on the Pacific Coast. It is a “masked figure” pendant, possibly wearing a bee mask. It is likely an amulet that served to reflect rank and/or status and was not just ornamental.
