Physical Description
Physical DescriptionNecklace comprised of multicolored, natural-shaped jade, quartz, and gold beads strung on a thin gold chain. 5 strings of similar beads on gold wires are suspended from the center of the necklace, each with 2 repeats of one gold bead, 2 jade beads, and one large quartz bead. The center string is longer with 3 repeats of this grouping. Presented in a box with a silver plaque indicating jeweler's location as "Rio Balsas / Guerrero - Mexico."
Historical NoteMexican President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, presented this necklace to Lady Bird Johnson in November 1964 at the Johnson ranch. The beads are believed to be of Pre-Columbian origin.
Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThis item was a gift from a foreign official to First Lady Lady Bird Johnson during the Johnson Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives on January 1969 for deposit with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
