Physical DescriptionCartoon print for the Lake Geneva Herald, Wisconsin, ca.1940-41. A man (“Finland”) is trapped under a boot ("Russia"). The soldier reads a note ("Note from the Secretary of State...requesting Finland to stop attacking Russia and withdraw from Russian soil") while stabbing the boot with a bayonet. Caption: "That's a hull of a message." Artist signature at lower center: "Masterson".
Historical NoteOn November 30, 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Finland. In February 1940, the war ended with the Treaty of Moscow and Finland lost 11% of its territory to the Soviet Union.
