Physical DescriptionLetter (A), Tom J. Miller, 23d Regiment Iowa Infantry, to JD Grove, 11/7/1862. Single sheet stationery. Stationery is headed by an oval drawing of General Halleck. Envelope (B) addressed to Mr. PD Grove, Nevada IA.
Historical NoteLetters to Mr. J.D. Grove from Private Tom J. Miller, Company A, 23rd Regiment Iowa Infantry The 23rd Iowa Infantry saw action during the Battles of Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Big Black River Bridge, the Siege of Vicksburg, and the Assault on Fort Blakely. Although Private Miller survived the war and returned home to Iowa, his friend Jake Grove, mentioned in both letters, was wounded May 17, 1863, at Big Black River Bridge, Mississippi, and died June 9, 1863, aboard the Hospital Steamer (riverboat) Hood.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
