Physical DescriptionPaper cast of an editorial cartoon printing plate for the Lake Geneva Herald, Wisconsin, ca.1940-41. Frame 1: A man (identifiable as George Washington) leads men during the American Revolution. Text: “We fought in 1776 that we might be free from the eternal wars of Europe”. Frame 2: A man (identifiable as Ulysses S Grant) leads men during the Civil War. Text: “We fought in 1861 to preserve the country which Washington freed from the eternal wars of Europe”. Frame 3: A man (identifiable as John J Pershing) leads men during World War I. Text: “We fought in 1918 to end all wars but still the eternal wars of Europe go on”. Frame 4: A group of men march to war. Text: “We of 1941 - will fight at any time to defend the United States of America but not to mix in the eternal wars of Europe, Asia, and Africa”. Artist signature at lower left: "Masterson".
Historical NoteBefore the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, many Americans were isolationist, or opposed to entering World War II, due to the amount of American casualties in World War I.
